Piggyback projects

Piggyback projects on existing voyages can be added to scheduled voyages with the support of the Chief Scientist and approval from the MNF.

Opportunities on existing voyages

Once successful Primary applications and Supplementary applications have been confirmed as part of the voyage schedule, there may be remaining opportunities for scientists to participate on an existing voyage under a 'Piggyback' arrangement. These include data collection from underway instruments, or requests to carry out a limited sampling program or to deploy a piece of equipment.

Application process

How to apply

Please refer to the voyage schedule to view upcoming voyages.

To check availability for Piggyback opportunities on a particular voyage, please contact Matt Kimber, MNF Science Operations Manager via phone +61 3 6232 5186 or email.

Piggyback projects will be assessed by the MNF for logistical fit and voyage compatibility. The MNF will consult with the Primary voyage’s Chief Scientist to look at options to incorporate the Piggyback project into the voyage research program.

Applications for Piggyback projects are to be submitted through a concise letter/email to the Science Operations Manager at MNF@csiro.au outlining what is proposed. The letter should include:

  • Purpose of the project and anticipated outcomes/national benefit
  • Description of proposed work, including sample collection parameters and post collection activities
  • Equipment required for the project (user supplied and MNF owned)
  • Any foreseeable impact to voyage objectives
  • Berths, if any, required
  • Any requirements for dedicated ship time through vessel positioning and/or equipment deployments/retrievals (note, station time may be extremely limited and, in some cases, not possible)
  • Indication of whether the Piggyback project already has support from the voyage’s Chief Scientist.

Successful projects will also need to meet requirements for the submission of planning documentation and post voyage reporting. All Piggyback projects are obligated to comply with the MNF Data Policy.
