Geoscience

Investigator has an extensive array of equipment for carrying out geoscience, geophysics and paleoceanographic research.The vessel can take cores up to 24m deep into the seafloor to enable paleogeoscientists to understand the changes that have occurred in ocean circulation in geological time. A suite of sonar equipment provides the ability to map the sea floor and below.

Investigator has two multibeam swath bathymetry acoustic systems, each are designed to fulfil a particular purpose.

The Kongsberg EM710 is designed for acquiring high-resolution, relatively shallow bathymetry and backscatter data on the continental shelf. It works best down to 600-700 m but can work beyond these depths.

The Kongsberg EM122 is a deep-water bathymetry system, which works best from 300-400 m to full ocean depth. Both the EM710 and EM122 will be capable of acquiring water column data, however, cannot be used concurrently.

The vessel also has a Kongsberg SBP120 sub-bottom profiler, which determines shallow sub-surface structure of sediments.  This can be operated in conjunction with either of the two bathymetry systems.

Investigator is also equipped for seismic survey work and is fitted with a seismic compressor system.  Arrangements for a seismic acquisition system are currently under being considered.

A gravity meter located in the centre of the vessel measures the local gravitational field.
