Australia's first Marine National Facility research vessel was the purpose-built ORV Franklin, which came into operation in 1985.
From 1985 until 2002 the Marine National Facility owned and operated the 55 metre oceanographic research vessel, ORV Franklin. The ship was purpose built in Cairns from 1983-85 for CSIRO, and commissioned in April 1985 at a cost of AU$12.2 million. The arrival of the ship coincided with the opening of the new CSIRO Marine Laboratories on the waterfront in Hobart in September 1984. The first scientific voyage was in June 1985.
